Capital Region Small Business Technology & Development Center to provide a Marketing Essentials workshop at the Wheaton, MD Innovation Center. The two day workshop was attended by twelve business owners who learned how to create and execute a strategic marketing plan. The collaborative workshop uses components of Sonata Venture's highly successful
Launchbox program to aid business owners with marketing strategy, branding, public relations, social marketing and optimization.

Whether you are watching local, national or global news it is pretty easy to identify that we are not out of the woods, economically, just yet. Travel, gasoline, and food costs continue to rise, while housing prices continue to decline. The number of new jobs being created today is nowhere near where they need to be in order to create a stable economy.
People at record paces are really starting to look at starting their own companies. Small Business owners and entrepreneurs are searching for ways to maintain and grow their businesses.
To set the stage, here are a few
small business statistics:
According to SBA, Small firms:
- Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms.
- Employ just over half of all private sector employees.
- Pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll.
- Have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years.
- Create more than half of the nonfarm private gross domestic product (GDP).
- Hire 40 percent of high tech workers (such as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers).
- Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises.
- Made up 97.3 percent of all identified exporters and produced 30.2 percent of the known export value in FY 2007.
- Produce 13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms; these patents are twice as likely as large firm patents to be among the one percent most cited.
Knowing that just over 99% of all employer firms are small businesses, it is important to continue growing firms currently in place as well as increase the number of small businesses that both start up and grow. Knowing how to read the industry, understand the market and put a plan together to optimize an organizations penetration into the market place is paramount to success.
Here are three ways you can make a real impact today:

KNOWLEDGE: Identify the SOURCE by asking the following:
How do
Your customers make decisions about purchases?
Who are
They listening to?
Do you KNOW your demographic for your company, by product?
Understanding how your potential prospects make decisions, what sources they trust when they research, and more importantly being able to identify the specific demographic target will make the difference in how you build and exploit your brand.
EXPOSURE: If your product or service cannot be found when you type it in to a search engine, how are you going to survive in the new digital world?
Has your company embraced social media and social networking?
Do you think social media and social networking is a passing fad?
Is your website optimized? How strong is your on-line presence?
Reports show that 43% of ALL 55 - 74 year olds use the web frequently to make purchases [as of March 22, 2011], with that being said, it is time to engage and embrace the internet and make it work for you.
REPORTING: If you cannot measure what you do, how will you know if you are successful? When you spend the time and money on building campaigns, advertisements or attending tradeshows it is important to gauge whether or not the activity is one that should be repeated.
KPI's [Key Performance Indicators]: Every time you launch an activity, establish an objective, a goal, and a KPI for it. KPI's do not have to always be revenue related. A KPI can be increase in brand awareness, a percentage of new traffic to your website, or in to your store.
When working hard to truly grow your business in order to sustain profitability and employ others you really need to work at it. Too often people are caught in the "it's how we always do it" syndrome. Sometimes you have jump out of the box. If you employ these 3 simple methods, you will see a change.

If you are looking forward to 2011 and growing your business, you need to plan for it. We have never heard a business say "we do not want to grow this year" - taking that to heart, you have to have a plan, a roadmap.
